Raiders
2006 Entry List
#10 Surfbird- Skipper/Crew: Cameron Eckert, Nigel Sinclair-Eckert
- From: Whitehorse, Yukon Territory, Canada
Comments: The Eckert family is chartering and racing Ratty in the 2006 Raid.
-
#9 Sparrow
-
- Type: 19' North Shore Dory
- Owner: Laingdon Schmitt
- Builder: Kees Prins
- Skipper/Crew: Laingdon Schmitt, Kees Prins
- From: Port Townsend, Washington, USA
- Date entered: July 2006
- Comments: The boat is an adaptation of the "North Shore Surf Dory" documented in John Gardner's books. The design we are building from was derived from that boat by Ed Davis of Maine, and written up in WoodenBoat no.163. It's a 19' double ended open boat, with a batwing ketch rig, plywood lap construction with fore and aft decks, flotation chambers, and bench seats designed by the builder, Kees Prins of Port Townsend. -Laingdon Schmitt

#8 Firefly
-
- Type: 20'6" Dovekie
- Skipper/Crew: Mary and William Neal
- From: Jackson Hole, Wyoming, USA
- Date entered: July 2006
- Comments: Firefly is a stock fiberglass Dovekie, Phil Bolger's 1976 camp-cruiser design put into production by Edey and Duff. With 21'5" overall length, 6'8" beam, 143 square foot sail area, and 600 pound weight, she draws 4" and her flat hull relies on leeboards and a bow centerboard. Her rig is simple, the unobstructed flat bilge convenient for sleeping aboard, and she beaches easily for camping. The only significant post-production modifications made to this boat are a sliding rower's seat and carbon-graphite oars, in an effort to keep up with the rest of this speedy fleet. -Bill Neal

#7 Bear
-
- Type: 26' traditional longboat
- Owner: PTWB Foundation
- Skipper/Crew: 3 adults/5 Sea Scouts
- From: Washington, USA
- Date entered: June 2006
- Comments: Bear is owned by the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Foundation and will be racing with a crew of Port Townsend Sea Scouts organized by Kim Aldrich. Last year the Sea Scouts finished third, with a first in team spirit!

#6 Mother Merry
-
- Type: 18', balanced lug rig
- Owner/Builder: Ron Mueller
- Skipper/Crew: Ron Mueller, Ben Stevens
Dale McKinnon - From: Washington USA
- Date entered: May 2006
- Comments: She looks great under sail! Stitch and glue design by me from my typical Merry family hull lines, hence the "signature" transom. Floorboards rise to seat height for a 5' X 8' platform for pitching one's shore tent on the boat - should we be faced with "Watbough" Bay again. Time to whittle the spars, etc for a 100 ft sq balanced lug rig. Also powered by a super secret bio-mass propulsion system when not enough wind. Fore/aft hatches to carry more beer, lawn chairs, fly, etc. -Ron Mueller, Web site: Merry Wherry

#5 Tern
-
- Type: 24' Gaff-rigged Ketch
- Owner/Builder: Ben Brouwer and friends
- Skipper/Crew: Ben Brouwer and friends
- From: Lopez Island, Washington USA
- Date entered: May 2006
- Comments: Tern is a lengthened (to 23'9') version of Ratty, but of lighter construction with riveted plywood planking on yellow cedar frames. Sail area has also been increased to a total of 260 sq. ft. in a gaff ketch rig. A modern wooden foil has been substituted for Ratty's steel plate. I believe she will be faster than Ratty. Designed for a rowing and sailing expedition this summer to Alaska and back, Tern will join the Raid on her last leg home. Web site: Hunter Bay Boat Project

#4 Swordfish
-
- Type: 18' Gunter Sloop
- Owner: Barefoot Wooden Boats
- Builder: Silva Bay Shipyard School
- Skipper/Crew: Richard Lyons and Quill Goldman
- From: Gabriola Island, BC
- Date entered: May 2006
- Comments: Plank-on-frame construction. Gunter-rigged sloop. Plans are adapted from Building Classic Small Craft by John Gardner. Just launched by the Silva Bay Shipyard School, the Mower Dory is unquestionably a fast if wet sailer; questionable potential under oars. Web site: Barefoot Wooden Boats
-
#3 Conjure
-
- Type: 19'6" Sloop
- Owner/Builder/: Dan Pence
- Skipper/Crew: Dan Pence
- From: Oregon, USA
- Date entered: May 2006
- Comments: Dan Pence is back with a new boat, Conjure, skin on frame hull with ply deck and cockpit. There are no sailing pics yet. The boat is 19'6' overall with 44" of beam and (bare hull) weighs a reported 150 lbs!

#2 Yuko
#1 Ratty
Raid 06
Summary:The 2006 Shipyard Raid was a success, at least that's what everyone keeps telling me. The seas were calm, too calm perhaps, the racing was good, as was the food and the company, and all that started arrived safely in Port Townsend. This year's Raid can be typified as a year of songs and chants, epic sea battles, long hours of rowing in hot sun, great meals on the beach, and always someone enthusiastic and interesting to talk with.
